Island Roads creating new homes for kestrels

Island Roads works with Riverside Centre to construct new homes for kestrels.

When construction work started to transform the former Southern Water depot in Daish Way to the corporate head office for Island Roads, a rotten Kestrel box was discovered. This was found on the ground adjacent to the building. Island Roads commissioned the Riverside Centre, which provides day care services and outreach care for people with physical and learning disabilities, to build new boxes to encourage kestrels to return to the local area.

Guided by the Riverside Centre Team Leader, Howard Morris, users of the Centre’s woodwork facility worked together to build several new Kestrel nesting boxes.

Island Roads are committed to supporting the Isle of Wight community and local organisations such as the Riverside Centre and has offered to support the Centre with ongoing work. This will include the production of a whole range of bird and bat boxes which will be used around the Island’s highway network, where appropriate. As part of this project, Island Roads not only covered the cost of the building material, but doubled this commitment through an additional donation, to contribute to the valuable services that the Riverside Centre provides on the Island.

Paul Herbert, Service Director said: “Not only have we been able to support the services that the Riverside Centre provides, but we are supporting local biodiversity on the Island by encouraging Kestrels into Newport. I look forward to this being the start of a really positive partnership. It has been great to work with such enthusiastic people and with such a highly regarded Island facility to produce these well designed boxes.”
