Island Roads on standby for heavy storms

Island Roads has taken a number of steps to help ensure it is well prepared to meet the effects of today’s expected storm (Dec 23). These arrangements can be called up throughout the holiday period as required.

We have additional teams on standby to support to the new Flood Response Unit we have recently acquired and also our gully emptying and road sweeping teams.

We have also ensured our sandbag stocks have been replenished.

Furthermore additional tree specialists are on standby should the expected high winds bring down trees onto the highway network.

We will be issuing Twitter and media alerts as required throughout the day.

Naturally we will continue to liaise with the Met Office and colleagues at the council’s emergency management team to ensure our responses are co-ordinated.

So far the hub has not been unusually busy given the conditions. There have been a few calls requesting sandbags. They are available at the usual locations: Daish Way, Newport, St Mary’s Road car park, Cowes, River Road car park, Yarmouth and Simeon Street, Ryde.
