Wroxall road improvements to begin in November

Island Roads has met with Wroxall community representatives ahead of major carriageway reconstruction works in the village which are planned to commence in  November.

The highways company is planning a major scheme to improve large sections of St John’s Road, High Street and Clarence Road – the condition of which has been highlighted in the local media following calls for resurfacing by local elected members and road campaigners.

Island Roads has been holding off undertaking the work firstly because of the closure of Leeson Road and then to avoid work in the busy summer months. The company is now planning to begin work on November 10, break for the Christmas holiday period so as not to affect trade over the festive period, and then resume the project in the New Year.

It is anticipated the work could take up to 12 weeks during which time the road will be subject to a 24hr closure with the exception of a two week window over the festive period.

During the project, preparation work will also be undertaken ahead of future work to strengthen a section of the embankment which was the site of a major landslip in 2022.

This week project managers have met with IW Council member for Wroxall, Lowtherville and Bonchurch and members of Wroxall Parish Council to explain the current resurfacing plan. A meeting has also been held with bus company Southern Vectis.

An Island Roads spokesperson said: “The local community has rightly highlighted the need for improvement work and we’re pleased to say that the work we are planning will not only improve the ride quality now, it will address the issues that have caused the road to deteriorate and also reduce the need for future maintenance.

“To do that we will have dig down to a greater depth to rebuild the foundations of the road. These deeper excavations do however mean that a road closure is required to progress the works as quickly as possible and equally to protect the work force.

“That will clearly cause disruption and so we are keen to speak to the community so people have advance notice of the work and can prepare accordingly.”

Island Roads will be undertaking the project in phases to reduce disruption to the residents of Wroxall. It will announce further details of these and the proposed project timings shortly.
