Yarmouth Bridge is due to reopen to road traffic on schedule tomorrow (Friday) following work by Island Roads to install a new deck.

A number of supporting timber beams have also been replaced, a new waterproofing system installed and the footways resurfaced during the eight weeks of work.

The project is due to complete tomorrow afternoon (Friday). It is the most comprehensive upgrade of the bridge since 2009. The work has been completed in conjunction with Island-based company Stoneham Construction, with the swing span remaining in operation for the majority of the work to allow river traffic to navigate the harbour.

Project Manager Nathaniel Saunders said: “We have not always had the best of weather, but we have managed to keep the project on schedule which we know will be welcomed by the local community given the diversion that has been in place for motor vehicles.

“We would like to thank the community for their cooperation and patience during the project which we hope will reduce the need for future maintenance on the deck. It’s also been great to have worked closely again with Island company, Stoneham Construction to deliver the project.”

At 90-metres long, Yarmouth Bridge is the Island’s second largest bridge. It is a seven-span structure with a central swing span, comprising steel main beams, timber beams and a composite timber decking.

The highly-durable new decking system is the same as that used to re-deck London’s Tower Bridge.
