Newport High Street

Island Roads is planning to resurface the lower section of Newport High Street in a scheme starting early next month.

The work to improve the road between St James Street and Coppins Bridge will be undertaken at night – between the hours of 7.30 pm and 6am – to minimise disruption. The road will be closed during work periods with a diversion in place but will reopen during the day. Pedestrian access will be maintained where it is safe to do so and there will be no work at the weekends to reduce the impact on local business trade.

The work is currently scheduled to last five weekday nights between October 2 and October 6, however, it should be noted that the programme may be subject to changedue to external factors out of our control. Residents and businesses most affected by the work have received letters explaining more about the scheme and how they will be affected. Updates will be issued should the programme change.

“Given the busy nature of the High Street we are particularly keen to give residents and businesses advance notice of this work,” said Island Roads construction manager Keith Gourlay.

“Following on from our work to upgrade Coppins Bridge, South Street, East Street as well as Medina Way and St George’s Way, we hope businesses and residents agree that under the Highways PFI there has been a significant improvement on the roads that serve the county town. This work will, of course, continueas the PFI progresses.”
