Districts
Using Stewards, dedicated to each of the Island’s six Districts, we will provide a visible presence, contact and link between the highway service and local communities.
All of our teams will be linked through our systems to ensure all planning, programming and works scheduling is linked, thus minimising disruption and maximising the benefits for local people.

District 1

The main towns in District 1 are Cowes and East Cowes, they provide important transport links to the Island for ferries from Southampton.
Described as the ‘home of world yachting’, Cowes hosts the internationally important Cowes Week every August. We will be making sure that our teams are well prepared for these events, and will provide extra staff to ensure that high standards of cleanline
District 1 covers the electoral divisions of: Cowes Medina, Cowes North, Cowes South and Northwood, Cowes West and Gurnard and Whippingham and Osbourne. It includes: Cowes and East Cowes Town Councils, Gurnard Parish Council, Northwood Parish Council and Whippingham Parish Council.
Island Roads teams will ensure that key tourist attractions such as Osbourne House are not impacted by our works during the peak tourist season
District 2

District 2 is at the heart of the Island, and provides a ‘transport hub’.
It is where the Island Roads main office, depot and Visitor Centre is based, and we look forward to welcoming people with an interest in the highways maintenance service and improvements to local roads, footways and cycleways.
District 2 is centred on Newport, and covers the electoral divisions of: Carisbrooke, Newport Central, Newport North, Newport South, Newport West, Parkhurst and Newport Parish Council. It covers key public services such as the main office for the Isle of Wight Council and St Mary’s Hospital and tourist attractions such as Carisbrooke Castle.
Island Roads teams are aware of the significance of Medina Way and Coppins Bridge, providing a key strategic link for many of the Island’s roads and will plan and coordinate our works to ensure that potential disruption, particularly during key events such as the Isle of Wight Festival, is managed effectively
District 3

Ryde, the main town in District 3, is known as the ‘Gateway to the Island’, providing a key arrival point from Portsmouth.
As such, District 3 is often the first impression for visitors to the Island, and the highway network will be a big part of this first impression.
District 3 covers the electoral divisions of: Wootton Bridge, Binstead and Fishbourne, Havenstreet, Ashey and Haylands, Brading, St Helens and Bembridge, Nettlestone and Seaview, Ryde East, Ryde North East, Ryde North West, Ryde South and Ryde West.
District 4
District 4

District 4 is the centre of much of the tourist industry on the Island.
Victorian resorts such as Sandown and Shanklin and heritage villages such as Arreton and Shanklin Old Village make up much of this part of the Island.
The electoral divisions of: Arreton and Newchurch, Sandown North, Sandown South, Shanklin Central, Shanklin South, Lake North and Lake South are part of this District, as are the Parish Councils of: Arreton, Lake, and Newchurch, and Sandown and Shanklin Town Councils.
District 5

Whilst Ventnor is known as being one of the sunniest spots on the Island, it is also known for its challenging highway network, including several roads which have moved/disappeared since they were first created in Victorian times!
District 5 covers the electoral divisions of: Godshill and Wroxall, Chale, Niton and Whitwell, Ventnor East and Ventnor West. It includes the Parish Councils of: Wroxall, Niton & Whitwell, and Godshill, as well as Ventnor Town Council.
One of the benefits of the Core Investment Period is the opportunity it affords us to implement schemes to resolve some of the long term geotechnical problems that are in this area, such as at Undercliff Drive and the Military Road.
District 6

District 6 includes the iconic Military Road, delivering one of the most spectacular road trips in the country.
From the stunning harbour at Yarmouth to the very picturesque villages and farms further inland, this area reflects the real diversity of landscapes on the Isle of Wight.
District 6 covers the electoral divisions of: West Wight, Central Wight, Freshwater North, Freshwater South and Totland. The district also includes the Parish Councils of: Totland, Shorwell, Shalfleet, Rookley, Freshwater, Chillerton & Gatcombe, Calbourne and Brighstone, and Yarmouth Town Council.
