Major road improvement work will take place in the Upper High Street, Newport, in the New Year.
The work will see the Upper High Street closed between its Pyle Street and St James junctions – effectively making the section a pedestrianised area during the scheme.
Work is scheduled to begin on January 5 and last eight working days (not including weekends) with a full road closure required throughout the project.
Island Roads has already visited businesses directly affected, to discuss the work and what can be done to assist them with deliveries. One step already taken is to make Mill Street two-way (though there will be no entry to the High Street. All business have also received letters explaining the project.
A full closure is required because the work involves strengthening the foundations of the road and this requires deeper-than-usual excavations.
An Island Roads spokesperson said: “It was a pleasure to visit businesses in the Upper High Street recently to explain more about the work and we are hugely grateful for the understanding and co-operation they have shown.
“While we will be working in the vicinity, and there will be no vehicular access, Newport’s Upper High Street will be very much open for business so it will still be a good time for people to visit the shops, pubs and restaurants for some post-Christmas cheer and bargains.”
Though every effort will be made to keep to schedule, factors such as the weather and ground conditions can affect the programme.
