A major maintenance scheme to replace key structural components on the Medina Way Bridge in Newport will take place from this September. This page will be updated to contain the latest information on the work.
Scheduled to start in mid-September and last for five-and-a-half months, the project will involve removing and replacing 16 bridge bearings, which are crucial for the bridge’s safe operation.
The project is of long duration because of the need to temporarily jack up and support the bridge deck while each bearing is replaced.
To minimize disruption, the work is planned outside the main tourism season and after local events such as Riverfest, the IW Festival, and the Classic Car Extravaganza. During the project, Little London and Newport Quay will be closed as through routes to safely accommodate the temporary support for the structure.
Traffic will be able to access the Quay via Fairlee Road and Seaclose, while Little London and its businesses will remain accessible via the existing road, which will be converted into temporary two-way outside of the Bargeman’s Rest.
There will also be short overnight closures of the dual carriageway during critical phases of the work, with the usual diversions in place. Pedestrian and cycle access to Little London and Newport Quay will be maintained throughout the project. More details on these closures, as well as answers to other questions you may have, can be viewed on this Q&A document
