section of highway in Wroxall showing where a landslip has been temporarily repaired with sandbags prior to full repair

This page will provide updates on Island Roads work on behalf of the Isle of Wight Council to stabilise a section of embankment at St Johns Road, Wroxall.

The work will take place at the site of an embankment slip that occurred in 2022, which caused significant disruption along this important route for many months. Temporary stabilisation measures were installed in early 2023 and have remained in place since. These measures were only ever intended as a short‑term solution, and after three years in situ, they are now being replaced with a new permanent scheme.

The eight-week programme of work is scheduled to begin on March 2.

A full road closure is required for the duration of the project though we will try to re-open the road, under traffic lights, over the Easter Bank Holiday weekend. During work, Ventnor-bound traffic will be diverted through Shanklin and Leeson Road via Whiteley Bank (as it has been through the current road improvement scheme). Though closed as a through route, pedestrian access and access to properties will be maintained. Redhill Lane will also be closed during work to stop this being used as a cut-through route. Pedestrians,  cyclists and horse riders will be able to use Redhill Lane during the closure.

The project itself will see tonnes of earth removed and the embankment temporarily stabilised by anchors to facilitate the construction a new concrete wall that will be profiled back to provide greater visibility for pedestrians. The concrete wall will use specialist materials that will complement the rural character of this area.

To deliver the project, we will once again be working with Island company DDGA, known for delivering specialist projects such as the Gills Cliff Road steel netting scheme and also the re-decking of the Cement Mills Viaduct on the Cowes–Newport cycle track.

We will update this webpage during the project.
