Residents are reminded that Island Roads will be resuming its road improvement works programme early in the New Year.
Schemes in Newport Upper High Street and Binstead Road will begin on January 5 while the major project to improve the main road through Wroxall will resume on the same date.
All projects involve deeper than usual excavations to address the underlying conditions that have seen the highway deteriorate in each location. This means that full 24-hour road closures will be required for the duration of works.
Binstead Road
The work in Binstead will see major sections of the road between Ringwood Road and Gwydyr Close improved.
Phase 1 to improve the section between Ringwood Road and Stonepitts Close is programmed to take place between January 5 and January 30. The second phase between Stonepitts Close and Gwydyr Road is scheduled to begin on April 13 and last until April 24. The work is being split to accommodate Southern Water works at Elenors Grove which is scheduled for between February 2 and Apri10.
The official diversion during the project will be signed and is via Station Road, Briddlesford Road, Mersley Road, Mersley Down Road, Brading Down Road, New Road, Brading High Street, Rowborough Lane, Beaper Shute, Brading Road, and Marlborough Road. Motorists are asked not to use the Binstead Estate as an alternative as these roads are not suitable for high volumes of traffic.
Upper High Street, Newport
At Newport High Street, the work will see the Upper High Street closed between its Pyle Street and St James junctions – effectively making the section a pedestrianised area during the scheme.
Work is scheduled to last eight working days (not including weekends). To assist businesses with deliveries and access during the project, Mill Street will be made two-way between High Street and Lugley Street (though there will be no entry to the High Street). The local diversion into town is via Gunville Road, Forest Road and Medina Way.
Wroxall
Following a break for the Christmas and New Year holiday to support local trade and to provide relief to residents, the work to rebuild and resurface the main road through Wroxall will also resume covering the section between Station Road and Coombe Park.
During this phase of work, the main access out of Wroxall will be via Ventnor so additional time should be allowed for affected journeys.
Island Roads wishes to thank road users, residents and business in advance for their understanding during these works and will continue to keep the community informed of progress.
Residents are also reminded that, though every effort will be made to keep to schedule, factors such as the weather and ground conditions can affect the programme.
