ESSENTIAL MAINTENANCE
TO MEDINA BRIDGE
Island Roads is carrying out an important maintenance scheme to Medina Bridge.
These works are being carried out proactively as part of our ongoing bridge maintenance programme.
The work is likely to have some impact on local traffic movements, particularly when lane closures are necessary. This page will contain regular updates on the project so please check back for the latest information. What is happening?
- Localised strengthening and maintenance works will be carried out to prepare the bridge for lifting operations.
- The northbound and southbound bridge decks will be jacked in turn using specialist equipment.
- The existing bearings (below deck) will be replaced and additional bearings installed to improve the bridge’s long-term structural performance.
- The movement joint (above deck) at the fixed end of the bridge will be renewed.
- Localised resurfacing works will be undertaken.
What are bearings and movement joints?
Bridge bearings are located beneath the bridge deck and importantly transfer loads from the bridge to its supports while allowing the structure to move safely under traffic loading and changing temperatures.
Movement joints are located at the ends of the bridge deck and allow the bridge deck and road surface to expand and contract as temperatures change.

- Starts September 2026 – 6 month duration
- Planned to avoid main tourism season
- The dual carriageway will remain open for the majority of the project.
- Lane closures will be required at certain stages of the works to safely reduce traffic loads on the bridge
- Some overnight road closures will be necessary while the bridge is temporarily jacked.
- Pedestrian and cycle access will be maintained wherever possible
