Structures Team

The Structures Team at Island Roads is responsible for maintaining, inspecting and improving the many structures that support the Isle of Wight’s highway network. This includes 199 bridges, culverts, tunnels, subways and embankments, along with 568 retaining walls across the Island. 

Since Island Roads was formed in 2013, the team has delivered numerous high-profile and technically complex projects, providing innovative, sustainable and long-lasting solutions to keep the network safe and resilient. Their work ensures that the Island’s transport infrastructure continues to meet modern safety standards while respecting the Island’s unique geography, heritage and environment.

What we do

Our dedicated Structures Team delivers a full range of professional services covering the inspection, assessment, design and construction of highway structures. Their work includes: 

• Regular inspection and condition monitoring of all highway bridges, retaining walls and associated structures. 
• Structural reviews and technical assessments to ensure safety and compliance with national standards. 
• Design development and option appraisals for maintenance, upgrades or replacements. 
• Project management and construction supervision, ensuring high-quality delivery of all structural works. 
• Planned maintenance and improvement schemes, from small repairs to major reconstructions. 
• Environmentally considerate solutions, ensuring work is sustainable and sensitive to the Island’s natural surroundings.

Our team

Our Structures Team brings together experienced engineers, inspectors, designers and project managers who work year-round to maintain and improve the Island’s critical infrastructure. Their expertise ensures that every structure, from large bridges to small retaining walls, is safe, reliable and fit for the future.  

STEM engagement and work experience

We are committed to inspiring the next generation of engineers. Members of the Structures Team have visited several school STEM clubs to talk about their work, explain the pathways into engineering careers and answer questions from young people. 

A small number of work experience placements are also available each year.
