Island Roads work on the Ryde Transport Interchange has won a coveted highways industry award.
The project scooped the Creating Better Places Award at the Chartered Institution of Highways and Transportation Annual Awards Ceremony at London’s Royal Lancaster Hotel.
The Creating Better Places Award recognises how outstanding design and implementation of schemes in towns, cities and rural areas improve the places around them for people and the environment.
The project fought of competition from national design and build companies and public bodies and the team collected their award from former BBC News presenter Louise Minchin who hosted the award ceremony.
The Ryde Interchange Project, delivered on behalf of the IW Council, was designed to provide better travel connectivity as well as much-improved public space for residents and visitors.
The project was primarily funded by Government grant from the Transforming Cities Fund following a successful bid by the IW Council, Portsmouth City Council and Hampshire County Council (together as South East Hampshire Rapid Transport) for £55.6m million. Island Roads delivered the highways element of the project which was recognised by the award.
Steve Ashman, Island Roads service director, said: “Naturally we are delighted that our contribution to the project has been recognised by such a respected professional body.
“It is great, independent, evidence that we successfully delivered the project aims of improving connectivity at this busy, multi -modal transport hub while also improving the public space for the enjoyment of residents and visitors.
“The project drew on expertise from across Island Roads and it is really pleasing that the skills and professionalism we possess here on the Island is able to compete with much larger, national organisations.”
Michelle Love, service director for highways, said: “It’s fantastic to see the highways element of the Ryde Interchange project recognised with this award. Island Roads delivered this work on behalf of the Isle of Wight Council as part of a wider package of improvements, including upgrades to Ryde Esplanade Station and the new pedestrian pier.
“Together, these enhancements are helping to create a more accessible and welcoming gateway to the Island.”
Island Roads work with the IW Council and other partner organisations to develop the Leeson Road Emergency Response Plan was also commended at the awards ceremony.
