Ventnor roads being upgraded

Two busy roads serving Ventnor are to be improved under the Highways PFI.

Works to resurface Leeson Road and Newport Road will be undertaken by Island Roads overnight in order to reduce disruption to road users.

Work began on a seven-night scheme at Leeson Road on May 18. On completion attention will turn to Newport Road which will be resurfaced in a project expected to last four nights.

To further reduce inconvenience, the works at Leeson Road will be done in sections: Bonchurch Shute to Smugglers Haven Car Park, Bonchurch Shute to View Point Car Park and View Point Car Park to a point 500 metres from St Boniface Road.

Work will be undertaken on weekdays between the hours of 7.30pm and 6am. Outside of work times, the road will be open to vehicles. Pedestrian access will remain at all times.

At Newport Road, once again in order to reduce inconvenience, work will be in two phases, Rew Lane to Downlands Crescent and Downlands Crescent to Downs Lane. Work will be undertaken Monday to Friday between the hours of 7.30pm and 6am. Outside of work times, the road will be open to vehicles. Pedestrian access will remain at all times.

Residents in both locations have been informed of the work and parking arrangements.

Island Roads project manager Derek Benfield said: “These schemes will improve two busy roads serving Ventnor and will inevitably cause a degree of disruption despite the steps we have taken to minimise this, such as phasing the working overnight.

“We would like to thank residents and road users in advance for their co-operation and hope that any short-term inconvenience will be offset by the benefits this work will bring to the local network.”
