Residents are reminded that the major project to replace the entire deck of Yarmouth Bridge will begin next week (September 23)

The work is scheduled to last up to eight weeks during which the structure will be closed to road traffic at all times with the usual diversion via Wilmingham Lane and The Middle Road in place.

Pedestrian access will be maintained throughout work and cyclists too will still be able to use the bridge during work as long as they dismount. Island Roads has also worked with the harbour commission to minimise disruption to river traffic.

It will be the first time the deck has been replaced in its entirely since 2009.

The work has been planned for outside the main holiday season to minimise inconvenience but also at a time of year when there is a reasonable chance of mild weather which is helpful to the performance of some of the materials being used.

At 90-metres long, Yarmouth Bridge is the Island’s second largest bridge. It is a seven-span structure comprising of steel main beams with composite timber decking.

The highly-durable new decking system is that same as that used to re-deck London’s Tower Bridge.
