Safety work to begin at Yarmouth Bridge

Two weeks of safety work at Yarmouth Bridge is to begin next week.

The work by Island Roads will install a more robust safety barrier on the south-eastern approach to the structure. This new steel barrier will be clad in timber to complement the rural setting of the bridge.

The bridge will remain operational during work but traffic will be controlled by temporary traffic lights throughout the project. Work is due to get underway on January 23.

Nathaniel Saunders, Structures Project Manager, said: “The use of a cladded system will ensure the bridge continues to meet the required safety standards but at the same time retains the character of the area.

“We are undertaking the work well outside of the main holiday season when traffic and river use would be busier and we hope the work will not cause too much local inconvenience.

“However for as long as the traffic lights are in place, we would urge motorists – particularly people on time-sensitive journeys such as those heading to the Wightlink car ferry at Yarmouth – to allow a little extra journey time.”
