Brighstone Viaduct

Brighstone viaduct is a Victorian seven-span masonry arch structure that carries the strategic and iconic Military Road through an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. At 72m long and 12m high, it is one of the largest highway bridges on the Island.

As part of Island Roads’ duty to maintain the structures network to a high standard, it was necessary to rebuild the masonry parapet walls, install new safety barrier, inject a waterproofing membrane and construct new drainage elements – all within one of the most environmentally-sensitive areas on the Island.

The 13-week programme of works successfully extended the service life of the viaduct whilst improving the masonry parapets to meet current vehicle containment standards with an engineered solution sympathetic to the history of the site.
