Yarmouth Bridge is the Island’s second largest bridge and carries the A3054 Bridge Road over the tidal mouth of the River Yar, to the West of Yarmouth town centre. It is a seven-span viaduct comprising of steel main beams with timber decking. What makes the bridge unique is the operational swing span to allow vessels safely in and out of the harbour.
A major project was undertaken to repaint the entire 90m long superstructure. This involved the erection of a cantilevered and fully encapsulated temporary scaffold to allow the safe removal of the existing paint system and application of the new coating system to extend the service life of the steel bridge within the marine environment.
The structure remained open to road and river traffic for the majority of the 15-week programme – only closing to allow the work to be completed on the swing bridge element.
