Students at St George’s School in Newport have been given an insight into the world of highway engineering.

Nathaniel Saunders and George Lovelock from Island Roads’ structures team were joined by highway operative colleagues Tom Minnion and Richard Southcott to give students a talk about the work undertaken to maintain the Island’s highway network.

Following a presentation by Nathaniel and George, students were shown around a road maintenance vehicle – many taking a turn in the cabin – and invited to don full PPE clothing.

The purpose of the Island Roads visit was also to stress the importance of highway safety and to explain the various career opportunities that exist in the highways maintenance industry.

“Virtually all Island Roads staff live on the Island so it is always nice to get out and meet people in the community – particularly such an enthusiastic and engaging group as the St George’s School students,” said Project Manager Nathaniel.

“Hopefully our visit will leave behind some important safety messages and perhaps even inspire some of the students to a future career with us and into highway engineering.”

Marie Wells, St George’s Careers Lead said: “This was a fantastic opportunity for so many of our students to experience the world of work at different levels, making links with learning to real life and gaining knowledge about the work Island Roads do. Everyone has had a fantastic morning and we are very grateful to Island Roads for their support.”
