A section of the Main Road at Shalfleet is to be upgraded in a major scheme by Island Roads.

The work under the Highways PFI will see the stretch between Station Road and Elm Lane resurfaced in a scheme scheduled to begin on June 24. In order to minimise inconvenience, the work will be undertaken overnight and in four sections.

The work, which will be undertaken on weeknights between the hours of 7.30pm and 6am is scheduled to take 21 nights to complete. A road closure will be in place in order to allow the scheme to be undertaken as quickly and as safely as possible. Pedestrian access will be maintained and the road will be open outside of work hours including at weekends.

The four phases of the work will be Station Road to Hamstead Drive, Hamstead Drive to Warlands Lane, Warlands Lane to Corf Road and Corf Road to Elm Lane.

Island Roads project manager Derek Benfield said: “Though this is a rural road we are aware it is well used and we hope that by working overnight and in phases we will keep disruption to a minimum.

“Those who use it will know that it is a section very much in need of upgrade and that we hope that any short-term inconvenience will be offset by the long-term improvements the work will bring. Coupled with the drainage and resurfacing work in Bunts Hill which is progressing well, we hope that road users, including many cyclists, will notice that the roads serving the Porchfield and Shalfleet are being significantly improved through Island Roads’ work under the Highways  PFI.”
