A section of the main Cowes to Newport Road at Northwood is to be resurfaced by Island Roads shortly.
The stretch between Coronation Avenue and Chawton Lane is one of a series of resurfacing projects Island Roads is undertaking during the autumn to improve both rural and urban roads.
Another particularly busy road to be improved during the programme will be Atherley Road in Shanklin. This will mean the road will be closed between Regent Street and Wilton Park Road.
The resurfacing of Newport Road at Northwood will take place over three nights (not including weekends) starting this Thursday (3 October). During work hours (7.30pm – 5am) the official diversion will be via Noke Common, Rolls Hill and Pallance Road. HGVs will be diverted around Rolls Hill, Whitehouse Road and Forest Road.
Using the period after the main summer season and before the onset of winter when adverse weather is more likely, the programme will see a combination of carriageway treatments used including deep excavation at some locations to address the underlying issues that have caused deterioration.
Residents most affected are being contacted by letter in advance of work commencing. Information boards will also be erected at each location prior to activity getting underway.
An Island Roads spokesperson said: “The programme does involve work to some well-trafficked sites across the Island.
“This means that while we always take steps to minimise disruption, there may be some localised inconvenience during this work.
“We do hope that any short-term disruption will be offset by the benefits this work will bring and we would like to thank residents and business in advance for their understanding.”
Other roads included in the programme are Moons Hill and Bedbury Lane, Freshwater; Coastguard Lane, Brook; Barrack Shute and Institute Hill, Niton (repairs ahead of further resurfacing next year); Newport Street, Ryde; St David’s Road, East Cowes, and Luccombe Village Road, Shanklin.
