Newport Road, Ventnor, work taking place in October

Essential work to improve Newport Road, Ventnor, including at the section known as The Graben, will take place next month.

The work by Island Roads will take place between Monday October 20 and Wednesday October 22 during which the road will be closed at all times.

The project has been programmed to avoid the summer season and also to fall within the school half-term so school transport will be unaffected by the road closure.

Though subject to change, the schedule is to work on the Graben for the first two days before improving another section of Newport Road between Lowtherville Road and Down Lane on the third day.

The work at the Graben will address the uneven road profile and cracking caused by ongoing movement. The Graben is named after the wider geological feature in which this section of Newport Road is located.

Because of the wider geological issues affecting Newport Road, Island Roads is required to undertake several interventions during the PFI period to ensure the section remains safe.

An Island Roads spokesperson said: “Everyone in Ventnor knows that more work is needed to keep The Graben safe for road users. While it is impossible not to cause some disruption we hope that by doing this work outside of both the summer season and school term time we can keep inconvenience to a minimum.”
