Yarmouth bridge forthcoming closure for annual maintenance works

Work to carry out the annual inspection and servicing of Yarmouth Bridge, Bridge Road, Yarmouth will take place from 16-20 March and residents and local businesses are being advised of traffic arrangements in place to help plan their travel around the area.

As part of the essential works, specific repairs are also being made to one of the main bridge wheels on the central swing span of the bridge.   For safety reasons, both for the general public and for contractors working on site, it will be necessary to close the bridge site (between the vehicular entrance to Yarmouth Ferry Terminal, near River Road roundabout, and Halletts Shute) to vehicular traffic from 9am on 18 March until approximately 7pm on 19 March.  During this time the bridge will also be inoperable and, as such, any large or high-sided vessels/boats that would normally require a bridge opening will be unable to pass through.  Small vessels will, however, be unaffected.

Pedestrian access will be maintained during the road closure, however there may be some short waiting times (but no longer than waiting for a routine bridge opening) should equipment/machinery be operating within the vicinity of the footway areas.

In addition to the road closure, temporary traffic lights will also be in operation at other times from 9am until 3.30pm between Monday 16 March and Friday 20 March 2015.

The alternative route for traffic during the works will be;

Travelling from Newport from Forest Road direction to Totland or Freshwater, use Bouldnor Road, B3401 Thorley Road, Wilmingham Lane, B3399 Newport Road, A3055 Afton Road, School Green Road (and reverse travelling to Newport)

Travelling from Newport to Yarmouth, via the Middle Road, use Middle Road (B3399 Newport Road), Wilmingham Lane, Tennyson Road, Bridge Road (and reverse travelling to Newport)

Travelling from Norton/Totland/Colwell area to Yarmouth, heavy traffic use A3054 Colwell Road, The Avenue, School Green Road, A3055 Afton Road, B3399 Newport Road, Wilmingham Lane, Tennyson Road, Bridge Road.  Light Traffic up to 6ft 6in can also use Hooke Hill, Copse Lane and Pixley Hill.

Victoria Keefe, Structure Engineer for Island Roads said: “We would like to thank residents and local businesses in advance for their patience during these works. These works are essential to ensuring the continued operation of the bridge however, we fully appreciate that this is a regularly used route and we will be doing our utmost to keep traffic delays to a minimum and, if work is completed and it is safe to do so, we will open the road earlier if at all possible.”
