A programme of safety work to install new high-friction surfacing at busy junctions in Newport, Carisbrooke and Bembridge will begin later this month.
Carried out over the course of a week, the programme will include laying new skid-resistant surfacing at the upgraded pedestrian crossing between St George’s Way and Furrlongs in Newport, Vittlefields Cross on the outskirts of the county town and at the new re-aligned junction at Station Road and Embankment Road in Bembridge.
The work by Island Roads in partnership with the Isle of Wight Council is part of the ongoing commitment to keeping the highway network safe.
All the projects are scheduled to be carried out at night in the period between September 27 and October 2 although laying high-friction surfacing requires dry conditions so the programme may be subject to change if the weather is wet. Information boards detailing the work will be put out at each location prior to work getting underway.
The work will be carried out under road closures, with local signed diversions being put in place.
The sites to be treated are Kings Road, Bembridge (junction with Station Road); Forest Road, Newport (junction with Whitehouse Road), Wellington Road, Newport (junction with Carisbrooke Road) and St George’s Way.
Cllr Phil Jordan, IW Council cabinet member for transport and infrastructure, said: “While I am sure residents will understand the importance of this safety work, it will in some cases involve some short overnight road closures.
We are therefore keen to highlight the forthcoming schemes now and thank residents in advance for their co-operation.”
