Our Highway Service

Island Roads is a partnership made up of VINCI Concessions, Meridiam Infrastructure and Ringway, providing a highway maintenance service for the Isle of Wight Council from April 2013 to 2038.

The services that our teams will be delivering include:

Maintenance Activities Reactive repairs to carriageways, footways, urban footpaths, kerbs, channels, road signs, road markings, highway drainage, street furniture, barriers and tree replacements. Maintenance of parking meters and off street car parks.
Environmental Services Amenity and highway verge cutting on and off highway, weed control, street cleansing, ditching, quartering and gully cleansing.
Emergencies & Winter Service Winter maintenance, emergency call outs to fallen trees, highway flooding etc.
Managing the Roads Programme of inspections and assessments including enforcement of overhanging vegetation, obstructions, and illegal footway crossings. Safety camera operation, Traffic Management Act (TMA) and New Roads and Street Works Act (NRSWA) and abandoned vehicles. Capital and reactive maintenance to CCTV infrastructure and operation of a control room and customer Help Desk.
Investment Works Enhancement of the carriageways, footways, street lighting and illuminated signs/bollards and structures, including bridges and retaining walls.
Geotechnical Schemes Undertaking monitoring and enhancements at known risk sites across the Isle of Wight to manage long-term geotechnical issues
Yar Bridge Management and maintenance for all aspects of the Yar Bridge operation

The Isle of Wight Council will be retaining responsibility for a range of services including:

  • Highways PFI Contract Management
  • Transport Planning and development of LTP (including decisions on adoption of new highway assets)
  • Road Safety Education
  • Transport Strategy (Client role on LTP Integrated Transport Schemes and Traffic Regulation Orders)
  • Traffic Manager’s Statutory Role
  • School crossing patrols
  • Transport Operation including Passenger Transport
  • Enforcement legal action through the Courts
  • Public Rights of Way, capital and reactive repairs to footpaths/bridleways (including signs and stiles); along with the trimming back of overhanging vegetation
  • Cowes Floating Bridge, bridge renewal along with operation and maintenance;
  • Parking enforcement both on and off street.
