Fishbourne Lane improvement works

One of the key gateway roads to the Isle of Wight is to be upgraded by Island Roads later this year.

The work to Fishbourne Lane, the road serving Wightlink’s Fishbourne terminal, will involve reconstruction and resurfacing of the road from its junction with Elenors Grove to the Wightlink terminal.

Not only will the road upgrade help create a good impression to visitors arriving on the Island, it will also reduce noise from the traffic, including HGVs, that travel along this residential road.

Following a number of meetings attended by Island Roads, Wightlink and the Isle of Wight Council the scheme has been programmed to avoid the peak summer months when traffic is at its highest and, where road closures are required these involve shorter than usual night time shifts (between 9pm and 3.30am, Monday to Thursday and 10pm and 3.30am on Fridays) to minimise the impact on businesses, residents and those travelling to and from the Island.  The remainder of the works are during the daytime and will take place with traffic signals to help control the flow of traffic.

Island Roads are continuing discussions with local businesses and residents to give advance notice of the intended work schedule. There will be no work undertaken on Saturday and Sunday nights and the road will be re-opened outside of work hours.

Other traffic management will be in place throughout the duration of the project between July 15 and November 1 (note – no work is planned during the school summer holidays). Further details of these arrangements will be announced nearer the time.  Please also note, there are a variety of factors including inclement weather and emergency works that may affect the timing of the scheme.  Signs on site will reflect any changes accordingly.

Wightlink will introduce a temporary weekday night-time timetable for five weeks in the autumn while the work will be at its height. For more information visit Wightlink’s website here

Residents are being informed of the work and how they will be affected by letter and there are two drop-in sessions in Fishbourne to meet residents face to face to discuss any queries they might have. These will be held at the Victoria Room at Wightlink’s terminal on February 22 (between 11.30am and 1.30pm) and March 1 (between 1.30pm and 3.30pm.)

We realise that despite taking steps to minimise disruption, this scheme will cause some inconvenience, so we would like to thank all businesses, residents in the vicinity, and other key local stakeholders for their support.

This page updated will be updated during the works to keep you informed of the progress of this road improvement scheme, in addition we will be creating an e-mail contact group for residents in the area, which will allow us to provide updates throughout the works.
