Lake and Sandown road improvement works announced

Busy sections of highway in Lake and Sandown are set to be upgraded as part of Island Roads’ busy programme of out-of-season highway improvement work.

Sections of Lake Hill and Broadway in Sandown are both due to be upgraded this month.

At each location, excavations are required to address the underlying ground conditions that have caused the highway to deteriorate in some areas. In some cases these excavations may be deep.

Though this means the sites will be closed as through roads for the duration of the work period, the need for future maintenance should be reduced.

Lake Hill and Broadway are due to be improved between Brownlow Road and The Heights in work scheduled to begin week commencing March 11 and last five working days.

Alternative routes via Perowne Way, The Fairway and Avenue Road will be signposted during the closure and traffic management arrangements will be monitored during the works to help minimise disruption for motorists.

Then – in work scheduled to begin in the week beginning March 25 and lasting four days – sections of Broadway, Sandown will be upgraded. Once again, the road will be close as a through route between Beachfield Road and Avenue Road.

In both schemes, access will be retained for residents as long as it is safe to do so. Pedestrian access will be unaffected during the works.

An Island Roads spokesman said: “We are continuing to undertake extensive work at this time of year, enabling us to maintain the network whilst minimising disruption to the strategic network during the summer months.

“We have scheduled these schemes, on what is a busy main route, to be completed ahead of the Easter holiday.

“We do recognise that, as important as it is, work of this nature does inevitably cause some disruption, so we would like to thank residents in advance for their co-operation and apologise for any inconvenience.”

Please note that, for various reasons including inclement weather and conditions experienced on site, work schedules are subject to change.

This work was previously scheduled for last month but postponed due to the need to co-ordinate with other activity on the network.
