Several busy stretches of road on the outskirts of Newport are to be upgraded in forthcoming improvements planned under the Highways PFI.

Island Roads will shortly undertake resurfacing at Long Lane and Shide Road along with Gunville Road and Priory Road as the intensive work currently underway to improve the Island’s highway network continues.

Though the programme is subject to change, the full 2.3 kilometre stretch of Long Lane is currently scheduled to be resurfaced from August 3 to August 14. This work will be undertaken at night between the hours of 19:30 and 06:00. Work to resurface the full length of Shide Road is sheduled to be udertaken on Monday (July 27) and is programmed to last six days. This work will be undertaken during the day, outside of the morning and evening rush hours.

The full 1.7 kilometre stretch of Gunville Road and Priory Road will be upgraded between July 27 and August 3 in another night scheme.

Keith Gourlay, Island Roads construction manager, said: “We are once again making use of overnight work where appropriate as we seek to keep disruption to road users to an absolute minimum. We apologise in advance for any inconvenience this work will cause but we hope that residents will welcome the upgrade of these busy sections of roads that serve Newport and the surrounding communities.”

The programme is subject to change and the latest information will be displayed on boards at each location or can be obtained from Island Roads by calling 01983 822440.
