Island Roads has thanked the Ryde community for its patience and assistance during work to upgrade busy Cross Street.

The project undertaken by Island Roads using local contractors was brought forward to ensure the town was fit to host the Pearl Izumi Tour Series later this month.

While other sections of the Ryde route are also being brought up to standard, it was the project in Cross Street that was most complex and involved most disruption, at the section that was closed between George Street and Union Street, to enable work to be done as quickly and safely as possible.

The project, which involved the rebuilding of the road foundation, utility repairs to a leaking main as well as resurfacing and re-marking has been completed in two weeks. Given concerns over the substructure of the road, it had been feared the work could have taken up to three weeks to complete. During the work, 1,000 tonnes of road material were removed and replaced and two leaks on the water main running beneath Cross Street were repaired.

Island Roads service director Paul Herbert said: “The works illustrate the benefits of team working between Island Roads, IW Council, Ryde Business Association and Ryde Town Council working to complete the programme ahead of schedule. We are really grateful for the co-operation we received from across the community.

“We are glad that we have been able to minimise disruption by finishing in two weeks despite some issues with the utilities along this section of Cross Street. The road has been significantly upgraded which was crucial for the Pearl Izumi Tour Series organisers but also means this busy stretch has been greatly improved for the benefit of Ryde residents and businesses earlier than was anticipated in the programme.”
